About
AutoCAD Electrical is the electrical toolset bundled inside AutoCAD that adds electrical schematic and panel layout features — symbol libraries, wire numbering, terminal block design, BOM extraction, and PLC I/O design. Used primarily by industrial control system designers, panel builders, and OEMs. Less common in building MEP electrical (which is dominated by Revit MEP), more common in industrial/process facility electrical.
How teams use it
By audience
- MEP Engineering
- Industrial/process MEP electrical engineers use it for control panel layout, schematics, and PLC I/O design.
- Less common in commercial building MEP, where Revit MEP and dedicated lighting tools tend to dominate.
- Specialty Contracting
- Electrical contractors who do panel-build/OEM work use it for panel layouts and BOM generation.
- Provides symbol libraries and wire-numbering automations that save hours over base AutoCAD for repetitive schematic work.
By phase
- Design
- Used through detailed design and shop-drawing phases for industrial electrical projects (process plants, manufacturing, water/wastewater).
